Sometimes the work is just ugly. Not failed ugly, though, which is a different thing.
I'm very attracted to artists that can do darker work that feels messy and imperfect. It actually takes great skill, I've found.
The piece above is from a composition book journal--gel pen and paint over masking tape, actually. Lots of the same in the images below.
